GSM calculation & Caliper test
Scope To determine the spot thickness and grammage of packaging material This test method covers the measurement of thickness of flexible packaging materials and paper and paperboard using contact micrometers
Reference ASTM F2251-03 – Standard test method for thickness measurement of flexible packaging material
ASTM D645/D645M-97 – Standard test method for thickness of paper and paperboard
Test Procedure
  • The test specimens should be condition as per standard WATER-GDC-T099.
  • Condition set 1 - Thickness
  • The thickness is measured using a micrometer.
  • Clean the micrometer contact area (foot and anvil – flat ground circular fixed face - with a tissue)
  • Place the specimen on the anvil in such a position that all points on the peripheries of the contact surface are at least 6mm (0.25 in) from the edges of the specimen
  • Release foot and allow reading to stabilize
  • Make at least five (5) measurements on each specimen taking readings on outer and inner locations. Record the average, maximum, and minimum thickness obtained on each test piece.
  • Report the average result and this should be used for all calculations.
  • Condition set 2 - Grammage
  • Lay the sample flat on the cutting pad, on a firm horizontal surface.
  • Press the steel template firmly down on to the surface of the sample.
  • Carefully cut around the template, using single cuts, holding the cutter upright to ensure a straight edge.
  • Weigh the cut out section to 0.001g.
  • Calculation For the samples where a 10cm x 10cm (4" x 4") has been taken:
  • Grammage = (sample weight x 100) grams per square meter
  • Basis weight = (sample weight x 0.0198) pounds per 1000 square feet
  • For smaller samples:
  • Grammage = sample weight x 106 grams per square meter
    X*Y
X and Y = dimensions of sample in mm.
  • Basis weight = (sample weight x 317.5) pounds per 1000 square feet.
    X*Y
X and Y = dimensions of sample in inches.
Level of Acceptance / Success Criteria Individual samples must meet required specification.
